I thought the stage effects and mechanics brilliant. We also thought the children’s voices great and the child playing Matilda brilliant. The story is pretty typical of Ronald Dahl and we knew the plot so there were no surprises there. However, and this is a big however, the roles of Matilda’s parents were badly played. Because they screeched and shrieked it was very difficult to hear what they were saying. We had three generations together and we all found it difficult to understand what was being said. So much of the repartee and information was lost and it took a while to catch their drift. When Matilda and miss honey had their quieter moments it was fine every word was clear. Why it is necessary to have the screaming, screeching and shouting one gets in pantos in an expensive production, I do not understand. I can’t believe the actors have voices left afterwards. Surely in these days of excellent sound production this isn’t necessary?!

We were hugely disappointed and left at the interval. The sound quality was so poor it was impossible to make out the words of songs and dialogue was impossible to interpret. Really disappointing!
